This lecture considers the importance of genre to the production and interpretation of literary texts. Taking examples as diverse as Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, the lecture explains what we mean by genre, shows how genre works in practice, and suggests questions that can usefully be asked of any work of literature.
